UX and Usability: Fundamentals
Course facts
Download as PDFFoundations, Principles & Application:
- A comprehensive overview of usability, user experience, and key concepts in human-centered design (including standards and methods)
- Understanding how design principles, heuristics, and best practices improve the quality of development processes and reduce follow-up costs
Analysis & Concept Development:
- Developing a user-friendly design concept using methods such as context analysis, personas, scenarios, and user story maps
Prototyping & Testing:
- Creating simple prototypes and systematically preparing, conducting, and evaluating usability tests
AI Application & Prompting:
- Targeted use of artificial intelligence for UX tasks and formulating appropriate prompts for analysis, ideation, prototyping, and evaluation
AI Evaluation & Limitations:
- Critically reviewing AI results for plausibility, data protection risks, and potential biases
- Understanding in which cases real-world user research remains absolutely essential
There are many benefits to involving a product’s users early in the development process. This applies equally to digital and analog products, as well as to services.
You’ll gain an overview of the user-centered design and human-centered design processes. You’ll learn the basic concepts and, through a case study, discover how to methodically improve the user experience. In the process, you’ll develop an eye for usability and an understanding of what really matters to users.
In addition, you’ll learn how generative AI can accelerate and expand individual steps of the UX process. You’ll use AI strategically as a tool, critically evaluate the results, and take into account data protection, biases, and the limitations of synthetic insights.
Day 1
- The Importance of Usability and User Experience, History, and Key Terms
- Human-Centered Models and the Human-Centered Design Process
- Case Study: Analyzing and Conceptualizing Using Context Analysis, Personas, Scenarios, and User Story Maps
- AI as a Sparring Partner: Structuring Research Questions, Formulating Hypotheses, and Preparing Artifacts—Without Replacing User Research
Day 2
- Designing products in accordance with relevant laws, heuristics, and principles
- Introduction to prototyping and usability testing
- Case Study: Visualizing and validating with prototyping and testing
- AI-supported ideation, prototyping, and evaluation: formulating appropriate prompts, comparing results, and critically validating them
Knowledge is conveyed interactively and is supported by videos, brief presentations, practical examples, group assignments, and a case study that runs throughout the course.
AI-supported exercises are directly integrated into the case study. Participants compare traditional and AI-supported approaches, discuss the quality of the results, and derive guidelines for responsible use in their own daily work.
This introductory course is designed for individuals who are involved in the development of products and services or who wish to advance their careers in this field—particularly product owners, project managers, IT professionals, business analysts, and designers.
It is also aimed at professionals who want to apply AI in the UX process in a practical and responsible manner, without losing sight of the perspective of real users.
You’ve already thought about what to consider when designing a user interface or a service. No specific prior UX knowledge is required.
No prior experience with AI is necessary. It helps to be curious and to have your own digital product or a specific product idea to use as a conceptual reference point.
The course covers the basics of usability and UX using examples, exercises, and practical tips. User interface design is touched upon but not covered in depth.
AI is treated as a supportive tool, not as a substitute for user research or usability tests with real people. Confidential company or personal data will not be entered into public AI tools.
